World’s Toughest Podcast

Welcome to the World’s Toughest Podcast, where we talk about any Obstacle Course Race you’d like, as long as it's World’s Toughest Mudder. Each week we talk to members of the WTM Community and share stories of success and failure in the single greatest event in OCR. We are the Number One rated Obstacle Course Racing podcast in the world according to Apple Podcasts and Amazon.com. Thank you. The Worlds Toughest Podcast is a production of Contender Media and is not affiliated with Tough Mudder or TMHQ. Opinions expressed are those of the host and guest and are not necessarily the opinions of Tough Mudder. But they might be.

Battlefrog was a short-lived but extremely popular race series from 2014-2016. For a brief period in 2016 they were the third largest OCR company behind Spartan Race and Tough Mudder, until they suddenly closed up shop overnight.

From the time they closed, a running joke in the OCR industry has been "Do you think Battlefrog is coming back?" Finally, the answer is yes.

Garfield Griffiths is a long-time and well-respected member of the OCR industry. He has worked with The CrossFit Games, Spartan Race, Savage Race, OCRWC and the first incarnation of Battlefrog. He is the new Chief Operation Officer of Battlefrog. He joined the show to talk about what Battlefrog did right in the past, mistakes they made, and why Battlefrog 2.0 is set up for long-term success.

Rea Kolbl won the sprint lap at her first WTM in 2017. Then she kept going and won the whole race. That had never been done before and has never been done since. On her way to winning the race in 2017 she tied the women's record set by Amelia Boone of 90 miles in a single WTM.

After winning it all in Vegas in 2017 she defended her title in Atlanta in 2018. She and Boone are the only back-to-back women's champions of World's Toughest Mudder.

Rea joins us to talk about her campaign with Ultimate Direction called "Run Your Own Race" and what that means to her. Also, we haven't had her on the show in a long time and we missed her.

Trevor Cichosz has finished on the World's Toughest Mudder podium every year since 2014. He has finished 1st twice, 2nd twice, and 3rd twice. He has three of the coveted WTM Orange Jackets for his three 100+ mile performances in 2016, 2018, and 2019. He has 660 lifetime miles at WTM with an average of 94 miles per race.

After Trevor won World's Toughest Mudder in 2019 he donated his race winnings to Giving Smiles, a charity that supports children in Peru. Trevor joins us to talk about the charity and why it is meaningful to him.

We recapped the first (and hopefully only) virtual World's Toughest Mudder with Kim De Voss, Jason Dupree, Anna Landry, and Carlo Piscitello.

Kim, Jason, and Anna all ran World's Toughest Mudder: Lockdown Edition running 50, 55, and 50 miles. Carlo was part of the 24-hour TMHQ Zoom Pit crew keeping runners and pit crew informed and entertained for the duration of the race.

They talk about the race, their favorite parts, their least favorite parts, and whether they would ever do it again. (Spoiler: Yeah, if they *HAD* to.)

World's Toughest Mudder: Lockdown Edition was this weekend. It was the single greatest virtual event in OCR. Which, yeah, okay.

Some great stories came out of the virtual WTM. Among them:

  • Three men ran 100 miles or more
  • The winning man and woman both matched the record for milage at a single WTM with 110 and 90 miles.
  • Olivia Patterson ran 50 miles in her apartment hallway. Her hallway is eight feet long.

We talked with Olivia for this episode about her crazy achievement. Stay tuned for more on WTM: Lockdown later this week. To hear about it first, join our text group by texting Will at (619) 485-2726. He will send you a text when new episodes go live and when big OCR news is breaking.

World's Toughest Mudder returns to the desert! In 2021 Tough Mudder will bring the greatest single event in OCR to Laughlin, Nevada just 45 minutes from Las Vegas. The CEO of Tough Mudder, Kyle McLaughlin joins us to talk about the new venue and several more announcements for 2021. Among them:

  • Prize money is back at WTM! $10,000 for 1st place with prizing down to 3rd.
  • Hard contender status for 2021. If you race as a contender you will not have access to the "gamification" elements introduced in 2019
  • The 2021 Holy Grail award is a HUGE medal, not a cup this year.
  • Season pass purchases come with a sweet Tough Mudder dry bag backpack
  • Holders of the $1,399 "Everything" season pass will have their customer service issues handled by Kyle directly.

Kyle McLaughlin went from being the President of Tough Mudder to just another guy like you and me to President of Tough Mudder in about six months.

Kyle has worked closely with Joe De Sena and Spartan to lead Tough Mudder through bankruptcy and the acquisition of Tough Mudder by Spartan. Without Spartan, and without Kyle McLaughlin, it is our opinion that Tough Mudder as we know it would no longer exist.

We are happy to welcome back to the show Kyle McLaughlin.

There are reports of Spartan buying Tough Mudder and rumors of Tough Mudder possibly closing their doors for good next month. Will talks about what is going on in the Tough Mudder and OCR community and shares his thoughts on how Tough Mudder has affected his life.

Whether Spartan buys Tough Mudder or Tough Mudder goes away or something else happens, 2020 will look different for Tough Mudder. Will shares the three things he's thinking about with all the uncertainty.

  1. It will be okay.
  2. No one can take the last nine years away from you.
  3. "When is the last time you did something for the first time?"

World's Toughest Mudder is THIS WEEK. This week we talk with Molly Kenneth for our once-yearly chat about How to Not Die at World's Toughest Mudder.

Before Will talks with Molly he takes a minute to talk about why he won't be running World's Toughest Mudder this year. It's not great.

The last Toughest Mudder of 2019 was last week, just outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Toughest Mudder West was held at the same venue World's Toughest Mudder was held from 2014-2017.

The men's and women's winners of Toughest Mudder West are Jake Ramsby and Jennifer Lynn. Jake and Jennifer join the show to talk about their race, their plans for World's Toughest Mudder, and what they thought about the "Dizzy Bat" penalty for Electroshock Therapy.

Before he talks with them though, Will talks about his disappointing race at Toughest Mudder West and how he plans to run 50 miles at World's Toughest Mudder 2019. (Spoiler: 25 by 10:00pm, 40 by 6:00am, 50 by noon)

Toughest Mudder West is this weekend. Johnny talks about runners can expect from the iconic Lake Las Vegas course and whether The Cliff will make an appearance. (Spoiler: Nope.)

Johnny and Will wrap up with a sneak peek at World's Toughest Mudder 2019 and talk of "gamification" on course in Atlanta.

Kyle McLaughlin is the CEO of Tough Mudder. Kyle joins Will to update the community on World’s Toughest Mudder 2019.

Two of the biggest changes this year:

  1. No more stressing about getting the venue as soon as possible on Friday. You will be able to choose your pit spot online before you even get to Atlanta.
  2. At the 2.5 Mile point of the race will be a Quick-Pit. Your pit crew will be able to give you food and beverages and communicate about what else you may need when you finish that lap. Also, Coach will be hosting a 24-Hour dance party at the quick pit.

More information on those additions to World's Toughest Mudder and much more in our conversation with Kyle McLaughlin.
