Amelia Boone is the only woman to win World's Toughest Mudder three times. No other woman has won more than once.

After being unable to compete in 2016 due to a leg injury, Amelia has been training this year to run 100 miles and become the first woman to win the coveted 100-Mile Orange Jacket.

Last month Amelia suffered an injury at a race. She saw her doctor recently who gave her bad news about competing at WTM 2017. We talk about what the doctor said and how Amelia is approaching the race this year.

Tougher Mudder East Regional Race preview episode with Grant Polson

Grant Polson joins us to talk about his story with Tough Mudder. Grant shares several stories including his love for Electroshock Therapy. Every time he goes through EST he tries to do something different, like playing with the wires for Pokemon EST. “Gotta Touch ‘em All!” At Tough Mudder NorCal Grant plans to help 100 Mudders through Electroshock Therapy.

Tough Mudder NorCal will be Grant’s first Tough Mudder as a married man, as he is getting married this weekend. Congratulations Grant, and welcome to the family Coral.

Grant also talks about his personal story. He was born without his left hand, so obstacles like Funky Monkey and Kong pose a unique challenge for him. Anke Frederich, a WTM vet from Germany joins us this episode, but first we talk about the Tougher Mudder Championship Series and the money that Tough Mudder has been paying out in race purses this year.

Will Dean has been making the rounds on the morning news shows promoting his new book “It Takes A Tribe” and we’ve got audio from three shows. While Dean was talking to Charlie Rose he let something slip that I had not heard before.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is asking for our help in apprehending a criminal. Listen for more details.

Before we talk with Anke we read some reviews. Have you left a review for the podcast yet?

Anke Frederich lives in Germany, but she flies over to the U.S. regularly to participate in Tough Mudder events. Just this year, among many others she’s done Long Island, Chicago, Whistler, Toughest Mudder L.A. and Toughest Mudder Chicago. She worked pit crew for World’s Toughest Mudder in 2015 and ran in 2016. This November she will be the first German woman and the 2nd german overall to get her 50x headband.

Anke has done more Tough Mudders in more countries than anyone I know. She shares her thoughts on the differences between each country when it comes to Tough Mudder.

Anke loves Tough Mudder because of the community. She talks about how much the community and the people that make it up mean to her.

On today’s episode we talk with the only four people to compete in all six Toughest Mudder races this year.

Jim Campbell, Melissa “Sharkbait” Dugan, Sara Knight, and Mark James ran each Toughest Mudder race this year in Los Angeles, Atlanta, the UK, Philadelphia, Whistler, and Chicago.

You want to know which Toughest was the toughest Toughest. We start with each of them telling which of the six races they thought was the toughest.  Then we talk with them about the Toughest Mudder series as a whole, and about each race individually. We wrap up by getting each of their rankings of all six races. Which race was the toughest? Second toughest? All the way down to sixth toughest.

And then finally, we assign point values to those rankings, add up the scores of each venue and give a definitive answer to the question: “Which Toughest was the toughest Toughest?

Toughest Mudder Chicago Recap Episode!

The sixth and final Toughest Mudder was held this past weekend in Chicago. Winning for the men was Ryan Atkins and for the women was Allison Tai. In addition to winning Toughest Chicago, Atkins and Tai both won the Toughest Series Championship by having the most milage over their three best Toughest races.

We spend some time talking about the men's and women's podiums and finally lock down where World's Toughest Mudder 2018 will be held. Spoiler Alert: We're not sure, but we're pretty sure.

Allison Tai joins us to talk about her win in Chicago and her Toughest Series win. She breaks down the race and talks about her plan and strategy as the race progressed. She also talks about her favorite type of mid-race fuel and why she needs to get sponsored by Kozy Shack.

Toughest Mudder Chicago Preview!

Eric Dymesich joins us to talk about his WTM experience and preview the Toughest Mudder Chicago course. Eric is new to the WTM community, with one World’s Toughest under his belt. He earned his 50 mile bib in his first trip to Lake Las Vegas. Eric talks about some tips on how to get the brown bib in your first attempt as well as talking about why World’s Toughest Mudder was such a meaningful event in his life.

Eric is an Iraq war veteran and he talks about how the camaraderie on the course at WTM is the closest thing he’s found to the military since he left the service.

Toughest Mudder Chicago will be a flat course, but a wet course. Not only will the obstacles have you in and out of the water, there is a river crossing, and a HIGH chance of rain during the event. Wet = Cold. Bring your wetsuits.

In addition to discussing the course, Will Hicks talks about the elites and who he expects to win. One dark horse: Amelia Boone. She hasn’t announced anything but Will thinks she’s going to make a surprise appearance to claim an Elite Contender spot and secure a shot at $50,000 in Vegas this November.

Will is back from his family vacation and has a lot of news to get caught up on before he talks Tough Mudder 5k with Jay Ruggiero.

Big items in the news we talk about are the new Toughest Mudder TV shows on CBS, the location of WTM 2018 and the new category this year at WTM: National Team. Will also does a little speculation on the future of co-ed teams at World's Toughest Mudder.

Jay Ruggerio is running this weekend in the first ever Tough Mudder 5k. We talk through the 3.1 miles and the 10 obstacles that many people will be facing for the first time ever.

Jay ran WTM for the first time in 2016 and completed 20 miles. He feels like he has unfinished business with the course and is looking to complete 50 miles in 2017. To help him and a small group of friends reach that goal of 50 miles he started a Facebook group called WTM 2017 50-Mile Team. The group now has over 200 members.

Elite Pit Crewing with Gina Estrada.

We talked with Gina Estrada about working Pit Crew for Toughest Mudder and World’s Toughest Mudder. Gina has worked pit for Team Four Eyes, Amelia Boone, Ryan Atkins, Austin Azar, Trevor Cichosz, Lindsay Webster, Allison Tai and more. Will got to watch Gina work a bit in Atlanta. When one of her athletes would come in she would feed them, handle their gear, and get them back onto the course like a Nascar pit stop.

She shares some of her secrets including having a “Pit Kit” ready and on hand at all times. Anything that her athlete could imagine they would need, she has in her Pit Kit. From batteries to nutrition to meds to chewing gum and more, she’s ready for whatever goes wrong. Building your own Pit Kit is a good first step to running a pit crew.

Running 75 miles at 200 pounds or better: Clydesdales and Athenas with Chris Betcher

Chris Betcher ran 75 miles at World’s Toughest Mudder in 2016. That’s great, but what makes it exceptional is he did it as a Clydesdale, a guy that weighs more than 200 pounds. (Don’t worry ladies. There’s a category for you too. Athenas are women who weigh more than 150 pounds.)

Chris wrote about his experience for Obstacle Racing Media which led to the creation of a Facebook Group dedicated to WTM participants that qualify as Clydesdales or Athenas. We talk about the article, about the group, and what he specifically did to prepare and execute to reach 75 miles in Vegas.

Yancy Culp stops by to talk about training for World's Toughest Mudder. Yancy trains many of the top athletes in OCR and Tough Mudder, including Morgan Mckay, Allison Tai, Glenn Racz, Matt Novakovich, and Rose Wetzel.

Yancy has reached 50 miles both times he ran World's Toughest Mudder and talks about how to train to reach that goal for yourself.

Tough Mudder X preview with Morgan Mckay!

Morgan Mckay is competing this weekend at Tough Mudder X, the inaugural One Mile Tough Mudder course. Tough Mudder X is what would happen if Tough Mudder and CrossFit got together and had an adorable little competitive baby. And if that baby had a $25,000 prize for first place.

Morgan talks us through the course and tells us what to expect, and how she expects to do. Spoiler alert: She expects to do awesome. Or terrible. No in-between.

Austin Azar joins us to talk about his 40 mile performance at Canada’s Toughest Mudder. Austin finished in 5th place, four seconds behind Matthew Hanson in 4th and one minute ahead of Trevor Cichosz in 6th. Austin finished 2nd to Trevor’s 1st at WTM 2016 and 3rd to Trevor’s 1st at Toughest Philly. Even though it wasn’t the top of the podium, Will asked Austin how it felt to finally beat Trevor.

Canada’s Toughest Mudder Recap Part 2: Elite Edition

On today’s episode we talk with four of the Elite Contenders to come out of Canada’s Toughest Mudder.

KC Northup finished fourth among the ladies with 30 miles. KC finished fourth in Atlanta at her first Toughest Mudder before a disappointing DNF at her second in Philadelphia. KC talks about her path from success to disappointment and back to success again at Whistler.

Shaun Stephens-Whale finished third among the men with 40 miles. Shaun has done Obstacle Course Races in the past, but his background is in Stair Running. He’s been all over the world running up some of the most iconic buildings ever built. Shaun finished his last lap in second place before Robert Killian pulled off an epic comeback to earn second place. Shaun talks about his thought process and how he felt watching Robert take second place bumping Shaun to third.

Allison Tai finished third among the women with 35 miles. This is Allison’s fourth Toughest Mudder podium, more than any other man or woman. She talks about the secret to her consistency, and why Canadians seem to take so well to Obstacle Course Racing.

Matthew Hanson finished fourth among the men with 40 miles. Matthew beat Austin Azar by four seconds for fourth place. Matthew said he felt like Austin was running him down, like someone hunting their prey. He gets into the race between the two of them and how it went down.

Toughest Mudder Whistler Preview with PJ Catalano

Toughest Canada weather report is at 14:10.

If you want to get straight to PJ, skip to 20:35.

PJ and Will talk about Toughest Whistler at 47:55

Will opens the episode with news from the world of Tough Mudder including the release of the Holy Grail Leaderboard. All of your milage from the Tough Mudder competitive series is logged and you are ranked based on miles completed. Right now Sara Knight leads all people with 120 miles.

TMHQ announced a new obstacle exlusively for Toughest Mudder Canada: Bears. That is a true story. They’re concerned about bears on or near the course so they’re taking some safely precautions. We talk about them as we preview Whistler.

Of all the guys that run multiple laps at Tough Mudder courses, PJ Catalano is the multi-lappingingest. He’s the only guy Will knows that has run three laps in one day at a course.

PJ has run WTM three times, in 2014, 15, and 16. He’s hit 50 miles or more twice but still feels like those years weren’t completely successful races for him.

One of the things PJ and Will talk about is the emotional side of running World’s Toughest Mudder. You won't hear many people talk about it, but WTM will provide you with some highs and some LOWS.
