We are the Number One rated Obstacle Course Racing podcast in the world according to Apple Podcasts and Amazon.com. Thank you. The last Toughest Mudder of 2019 was last week, just outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Toughest Mudder West was held at the same venue World's Toughest Mudder was held from 2014-2017.

The men's and women's winners of Toughest Mudder West are Jake Ramsby and Jennifer Lynn. Jake and Jennifer join the show to talk about their race, their plans for World's Toughest Mudder, and what they thought about the "Dizzy Bat" penalty for Electroshock Therapy.

Before he talks with them though, Will talks about his disappointing race at Toughest Mudder West and how he plans to run 50 miles at World's Toughest Mudder 2019. (Spoiler: 25 by 10:00pm, 40 by 6:00am, 50 by noon)

Johnny Little, VP of International Development for Tough Mudder and Race Director for Toughest Mudder South, Toughest Mudder West and World's Toughest Mudder joins the show.

Toughest Mudder South was last month. There were a few hiccups. The first lap was only 4.5 miles long. The second lap and every lap after were 5.5 miles long. Johnny talks about what went wrong and how they fixed it on the fly.

Toughest Mudder West is this weekend. Johnny talks about runners can expect from the iconic Lake Las Vegas course and whether The Cliff will make an appearance. (Spoiler: Nope.)

Johnny and Will wrap up with a sneak peek at World's Toughest Mudder 2019 and talk of "gamification" on course in Atlanta.

Kyle McLaughlin is the CEO of Tough Mudder. Kyle joins Will to update the community on World’s Toughest Mudder 2019.

Two of the biggest changes this year:

  1. No more stressing about getting the venue as soon as possible on Friday. You will be able to choose your pit spot online before you even get to Atlanta.
  2. At the 2.5 Mile point of the race will be a Quick-Pit. Your pit crew will be able to give you food and beverages and communicate about what else you may need when you finish that lap. Also, Coach will be hosting a 24-Hour dance party at the quick pit.

More information on those additions to World's Toughest Mudder and much more in our conversation with Kyle McLaughlin.

Amelia Boone holds nearly every women's record at World’s Toughest Mudder. She was the first woman to win back to back titles. She was the first woman to run 90 miles. She is the only woman to win World’s Toughest Mudder three times. More than any other woman in Obstacle Course Racing she has achieved breakout success with commercials, endorsements, and magazine covers.

Today on the show Amelia Boone announces her return to competition at World's Toughest Mudder.

Trevor Cichosz has more individual podiums at World’s Toughest Mudder than anyone else alive. Cichosz has been on the men’s podium every single year since 2014, a five-year streak that is still ongoing. Starting in 2014 Cichosz has finished World’s Toughest Mudder in 3rd place, 2nd place, 1st place, 3rd place, and most recently, 2nd place in 2018. If that pattern holds up Cichosz will claim his 2nd World’s Toughest Mudder championship this November in Atlanta.

Kris Mendoza is one of the most beloved members of the Tough Mudder community. Kris has run World’s Toughest Mudder every year since 2014, finishing with 50 miles in his first year. In 2017 he was on the first-place relay team and in 2018 he won his first individual World’s Toughest Mudder championship. He won the race with a dramatic pass of Trevor Cichosz, the Men's Champion in 2016. Mendoza passed Cichosz less than one mile from the finish line. Mendoza’s win in 2018 was the closest, most dramatic finish in World’s Toughest Mudder history.

Mendoza is also a doctor, working as a dental anesthesiologist near his training grounds in Colorado.

Ryan Atkins is the only six-time champion of World’s Toughest Mudder. No one else has won it more than three times and no other man has won it more than twice. Atkins won his first title in 2013 with the first-ever 100-mile performance at World’s Toughest Mudder. He also won individual titles in 2014 and 2017 as well as winning team titles in 2015, 2016, and 2018. His 2016 team performance with Jon Albon of 105 miles earned them the bonus prize of $100,000. Atkins also holds the record for highest mileage at a single WTM with 110 miles in 2017. Atkins is undoubtedly the greatest athlete in endurance OCR.

Rea Kolbl is the reigning women’s champion of World’s Toughest Mudder. Her win in Atlanta in 2018 was a successful defense of her first win in Las Vegas 2017. With her back-to-back wins in 2017 and 2018 she became the first back-to-back individual winner since Amelia Boone in 2014 and 2015. Her 90 miles in 2017 tied the record for a woman set by Amelia Boone in 2012.

Atkins and Kolbl are the only past winners to win back to back individual titles at two different race venues. Atkins won in 2013 in New Jersey and 2014 in Vegas. Kolbl won in 2017 in Vegas and 2018 in Atlanta.

Ryan and Rea talked with us from a boat landing in Fiji. They will be teammates competing on the new Eco-Challenge airing on Amazon Prime in 2020. Stay tuned for more on the Eco-Challenge next year.

Toughest Mudder South is this weekend outside Dallas. It will have 20 obstacles over the five-mile course. The man and woman who complete the most laps in 12 hours will win the race. Carlo Piscitello will be at the race with live updates all night long for The OCR Report on Instagram.

Before Carlo and Will talk about the race, they talk about the first time Carlo ran World's Toughest Mudder. Will and Carlo both ran World's Toughest Mudder for the first time in 2015. They share stories from their first time including the common experience of bringing FAR too much gear to your first WTM and having to haul it all in, and then hauling it all out once the race is over. And then you see Ryan Atkins show up with a carry-on bag that would fit underneath the seat of an airplane and you wonder what you're even doing out there on the same course with him.

Nutrition is one of the most difficult, yet critical parts of your success at World's Toughest Mudder. What works for one athlete may not work at all for another athlete. As part of their race fueling strategy, many runners at WTM like to use "real" food such as sandwiches, beef jerky, or even pizza.

But what if you were not able to get the race fuel that best served your body? What if you could no longer get the pizza you needed to run your best race?

Brian Thompson has been investigating this very thing since 2016 on his Investigative Journalism Program (or I.J.P) called "Whatever Happened to Pizza at McDonald's. We at World's Toughest Podcast have followed his investigation for years and are happy to welcome him to our show.

The new President of Tough Mudder, Kyle McLaughlin, joins the show this week. Kyle and Will talk about a rough 2018, a good 2019 so far, and what it took to get from there to here.

Kyle drops a fair bit of breaking news in the interview, including a return to Australia for Toughest Mudder in 2020 and the debut of a "Full Weekend Experience" for World's Toughest Mudder. Whether you are running WTM, or working pit crew, or not doing either; If you love Tough Mudder, the President of Tough Mudder says you need to be in Atlanta this November.

The last event of the weekend of World's Toughest Mudder is called "The Bar Crawl". It's not called that because people crawl from bar to bar though. It's called the Bar Crawl because everyone is so sore, they have to crawl to get to the bar. Or at least that's the story we heard from our first guest this episode.

We are joined by six guests we talked to at the bar crawl the night after World's Toughest Mudder 2018.

J.D. Allen is an Atlanta local and veteran of multiple World's Toughest Mudders. He shares his thoughts on this years version of the race.

Mike Stefano and Katelyn Ritter are the hosts of the Obstacle Running Adventures podcast. Mike ran WTM for the first time this year and Katelyn pitted him all the way to 50 miles.

Chris Wilkins and John Cheek came all the way from the UK to run World's Toughest Mudder. They have advice for international runners thinking about making the trip.

Kenny Rotter ran 40 miles in the bitter cold this year and ran into Will Hicks multiple times over the weekend. He talks about how to take the Tough Mudder spirit into "real life" off the course.

How was your race at World's Toughest Mudder 2018? We talked with over a dozen members of the WTM community at the Champion's Brunch and asked them that question.

We have said for two years now that we talk about "success and failure" at World's Toughest Mudder. Not everyone had a great race.

To everyone who had a great race: Congratulations! To everyone who knows they could have done better: That's ok. Now you have motivation to last all year long. We will see you at WTM 2019.

How was your race? Tell us in a review on Apple Podcasts or Amazon.com

Trevor Cichosz is the men's 2016 World's Toughest Mudder Champion. During his win in 2016 he became one of the seven men to run 100 miles in a single World's Toughest Mudder and joined the exclusive "Orange Jacket Club."

Trevor recently ran 219 miles in a race across Scotland. During the 65 hours it took him to run, he did not sleep at all. He won the race.

One interesting part of Trevor's race strategy is he makes sure his pit crew does NOT tell him standing in the race. He doesn't want to know what place he is in. This is part of his plan to "Race the course, not the competition."
