World’s Toughest Podcast

Welcome to the World’s Toughest Podcast, where we talk about any Obstacle Course Race you’d like, as long as it's World’s Toughest Mudder. Each week we talk to members of the WTM Community and share stories of success and failure in the single greatest event in OCR. We are the Number One rated Obstacle Course Racing podcast in the world according to Apple Podcasts and Amazon.com. Thank you. The Worlds Toughest Podcast is a production of Contender Media and is not affiliated with Tough Mudder or TMHQ. Opinions expressed are those of the host and guest and are not necessarily the opinions of Tough Mudder. But they might be.

Ulrikke Evensen joins us to talk about her first-place finish at Europe's Toughest Mudder.

Ulrikke ran 45 miles at Europe's Toughest Mudder, tying the women's record held by Lindsay Webster and Allison Tai.

Ulrikke talks about how the race went for her, how the weather affected her, and how a man named Sam from the U.K. stepped up at the last minute to be her pit crew. Well done Sam. You're smashing it.

Before we talk with Ulrikke we talk about the men's and women's podiums. We will discuss the full list of results and mileage totals when they are released by TMHQ.

Allison Tai and Shaun Stephens-Whale are the Toughest Mudder South women's and men's second-place finishers.

Allison ran 40 miles for her second-place finish. Allison's personal best for Toughest Mudder is her 45-mile performance at Chicago in 2017 to secure the Toughest Mudder Series win.

Shaun Stephens-Whale ran 45 miles for his second-place. Shaun and eventual winner Ryan Atkins traded the lead back and forth for the first 30 miles.

Before we talk with Allison and Shaun we take a deep dive into the numbers of Toughest Mudder South. How many runners were there? How many earned their contender status? Was this the hardest Toughest Mudder? Prove it.

Europe's Toughest Mudder preview!

Ian Kay joins us to talk about the weather, the course, and the obstacles for Europe's Toughest Mudder.

Europe's Toughest Mudder is an eight-hour race on a five-mile looped course. The man and woman who complete the most laps in eight hours are crowned "Europe's Toughest Mudder".

Before we talk with Ian we talk about the prizing for the race, including the fact that winning Europe's Toughest Mudder is worth about 10% more than winning a Toughest Mudder in America.

We review a few common questions about the rules and then we talk about the elites to watch this weekend. The biggest news with the elites is the one who WON'T be there. Jon Albon is competing in the Trail Running World Championships this weekend in Spain and will not be in the U.K. to defend his title from last year.

Orla Walsh joins us to talk about the mental aspect of racing TMX. Orla talks about the mantras and self-talk she uses to push herself while she is out on course. We also talk about her second place finish at TMX Miami and what it will take to beat Corinna Coffin at the TMX championships in Virginia on June 8th.

Before we talk with Orla, we have a report from listener Wil Chung about Tough Mudder London, we have an announcement about a brand new way to listen to the show (Amazon Alexa. It’s awesome) and Will talks about nicknames in Obstacle Course Racing.

Michelle Ford is one of three people and the only woman to win a podium at World’s Toughest Mudder and TMX. Those other two? Ryan Atkins and Hunter McIntyre, two of the indisputably best athletes in OCR.

Michelle finished in third place at TMX Sacramento recently. TMX is a one-mile race combining classic Tough Mudder obstacles with functional fitness stations such as box jumps and pull ups.

Michelle talks about her experience at TMX and talks about why the sub-20 minute race was more miserable than the entire 24 hours she spent at World’s Toughest Mudder.

Francis Lackner and Sue Harvey-Brown join us in this episode.

You may have seen Francis on a Tough Mudder course in his jolly red suit carrying his running partner, Santa Claus. Santa has "run" 39 Tough Mudder events. Francis plans to cross the 100 event mark himself in 2018.

In June of 2017, Francis lost his mom to cancer. A few months later Francis was running Toughest Mudder Chicago. His mom was supposed to there with him. On his second lap, the emotions became too much and he felt ready to quit. Instead of quitting, Francis and Ryan Cray decided to spend some extra time at the top of Everest 2.0, just helping people over the obstacle. The penalty for failing the obstacle was an additional 3/4 mile run. That extra time turned into an hour, and then into two hours, and then into four hours. Francis and Ryan left Everest to finish their second lap after 5 and a half hours on top of Everest.

After Toughest Mudder ended at 8:30 Francis spent the morning honoring his mother. He passed out red plastic roses to TMHQ staff, volunteer, and runners. The roses represented "One more day above the roses" the title of a song that became important to Ryan and his mother as she battled with cancer. Ryan tells the story of the roses and everything that happened that weekend.

Sue Harvey-Brown is the liaison between Merrell and Tough Mudder. When Merrell is working on a new initiative with Tough Mudder, odds are Sue is not far from the work being done.

Merrell and World's Toughest Podcast are partnering to bring you the Merrell Mudder Moment. This is a moment that happened to you or someone you know on a Tough Mudder course. Maybe the moment happened off the course and Tough Mudder was how you conquered it, or found peace with it. Or maybe Tough Mudder was how you honored someone like Francis and his mother.

We're going to highlight a new Merrell Mudder Moment every other month in 2018. Honorees will receive a pair of Merrell trail running shoes like the All Out Crush 2.0 and the opportunity to share their story on World's Toughest Podcast.

To submit your Merrell Mudder Moment, email Worldstoughestpodcast@gmail.com with Merrell Mudder Moment or MMM in the subject line. In the body of the email tell your story. What happened? How did you deal with it? How were you changed? Winners will be selected by World's Toughest Podcast and Merrell. Good luck!

Heather Heaton did her first World’s Toughest Mudder in 2014. She went in knowing nothing. After taking her lumps from the course and the sandstorm she joined the World’s Toughest community online and came back ready for anything her next time.

Heather is a member of Team Three Rex. They are best known for their  WTM Pit Crew headband fundraiser. In 2017 they sold 500 headbands with all the proceeds going to charity.

Before we talk with Heather we talk about the race that wasn’t. Toughest Mudder West was canceled this past weekend due to weather-related safety concerns. We talk about all the exciting cancellation news and break down the nine possible locations TMHQ could hold a rescheduled Toughest Mudder West.

Toughest Mudder West is this weekend. This is the first Toughest Mudder of the eight-race series for 2018.

Deanna Brasz and I talk about the course, the obstacles, and what people can expect from this cold, difficult race.

Deanna was one of the stars of Tougher Mudder in 2017. She ran 10 Tougher Mudders, with seven podiums, and four first place finishes. Three times last year she ran Tougher on Saturday morning and then ran the eight-hour Toughest Mudder on Saturday night.

Before we talk with Deanna, we talk about the elite competition at Toughest Mudder West. On the men’s side Ryan Atkins is the heavy favorite. He will face competition from Kris Mendoza, Glenn Racz, and Tyler Nash, as well a few possible surprises.

On the women’s side, four reigning champions will face off. World’s Toughest Mudder champion Rea Kolbl will face off against Toughest Mudder series champion Allison Tai, Spartan World Champion Lindsay Webster, and Spartan Ultrabeast World Champion Morgan Mckay.

Hunter McIntyre is often called a “character” or a “bad boy” or a “big personality”, and those things may be true. But he’s no dummy. You can hear in this conversation between Hunter and Will that Hunter takes his training seriously. Hunter has his nutrition dialed in. His job is winning races and he takes his job seriously.

Hunter talks about training for and winning TMX, his experience as the longtime champion on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge, and the job that changed the course of his life. He also has thoughts on Spartan Race’s pro team, Joe DeSena’s vision for the future of OCR, and much, much more.

You can jump straight to our talk with Hunter McIntyre at 21:09.

Ian Panter ran 30 miles at World’s Toughest Mudder in 2016. The last eight of those miles were on a broken foot. In 2017 after running Tough Mudder, he was a passenger in a car getting a ride back to his hotel. He was planning on running Toughest Mudder Philly that night and wanted to catch a quick nap before start time at midnight. As his car was leaving the venue he was hit by another car. Ian almost died from the accident and even nine months later is not 100% fully healed.

Ian talks about how he is doing now, the five months of his life he has no memory of, and the love and support he received from the World’s Toughest Mudder community during his recovery.

Tough Mudder announced 26 cities will host a Tough Mudder 5k in 2018. We talked with Jay Ruggiero about the first ever Tough Mudder 5k in this bonus ep from last year.

---

Jay Ruggerio is running this weekend in the first ever Tough Mudder 5k. We talk through the 3.1 miles and the 10 obstacles that many people will be facing for the first time ever.

Jay ran WTM for the first time in 2016 and completed 20 miles. He feels like he has unfinished business with the course and is looking to complete 50 miles in 2017. To help him and a small group of friends reach that goal of 50 miles he started a Facebook group called WTM 2017 50-Mile Team. The group now has over 200 members.

Adriane Alvord joins the show to share her story.

Adriane finished in 9th Place at her first WTM in 2016. After qualifying as an Elite Contender at Toughest Mudder Philly she had high hopes for 2017. The race didn't end up working out the way she hoped, after a nasty fall from Stage 5 Clinger left her with a concussion and unable to run in a straight line.

Adriane has competed in the past two seasons of American Ninja Warrior and has high hopes to compete again this year. She also placed third at the BFX-24 race that was won by Adriane's "concussion buddy" Morgan Mckay.

Adriane also talks about her Dressage business. (It rhymes with Massage.) She says the best way to explain Dressage is "Ballet with horses".

Most people at World's Toughest Mudder write their names on their bibs, or a nickname. Adriane writes "Unbroken". Adriane escaped a violent abusive relationship and writes that on her bib to remind herself and to show others that she is still Unbroken.

TMHQ hosts a large brunch the day after World’s Toughest Mudder. It’s a celebration of the event, the winners, and the community. After brunch Will sat down with Sue Harvey Brown, Kris Mendoza, and Kris’ parents, Katie and Danny Mendoza.

As part of her job for Merrell Sue is the liaison to Tough Mudder and the WTM Community. But she’s also a part of the community. She ran two Toughest Mudders in 2017 as well as World’s Toughest Mudder. She talks about her experience on the course as well as what Merrell has coming up in 2018.

Kris Mendoza is one of only seven people on the planet who have run 100 miles at WTM. He won 3rd place at WTM 2016 and was part of Team USA 8 that ran 120 miles at WTM 2017. He is the only OCR athlete we know of with his own theme song.

Katie and Danny Mendoza are Kristopher’s parents. They worked pit crew for Kris and his team. They talk about how proud they are of their son, but also how it feels as a parent to know your son is out on the course freezing cold and suffering.

They gave Will one of their limited edition DOZA hats. He wears it everywhere now.

On today’s show, Back to the Phones!

We take calls from Melissa “Sharkbait” Dugan, Ian Richardson, and Molly Kenneth on today’s episode. We start by talking about WTM 2017 but each conversation finds its own way.

Before we talk with the callers we talk about some Tough Mudder volunteer news, I messed up with Australia again, and Tough Mudder is rolling out ANOTHER new event series: Puppy Mudder. For real this time.

You have homework. Record yourself saying FIVE STARS and email it to worldstoughestpodcast at gmail dot com. Also, leave a review for the podcast on iTunes. Homework is due on Friday. Any Friday.

Kickoff Week 2018 Continues!

The morning after WTM 2017 Will Hicks took his microphone to the hotel lobby to see who he could find. He ended up talking with Zoe Szczepanek, Maria Herrera, Gaspar Vazquez, and Evan Perperis for this episode.

Zoe Szczepanek (Scha-pah-neck. You can do it) was the sideline reporter for the Facebook Live coverage of WTM 2017. She shares her thoughts on the event, the community, and her future plans in the sport.

2017 was Maria Herrera's first time at WTM. She suffered an injury but still cranked out 35 miles her first time out.

Gaspar Vazquez was also a rookie this year. He finished with 50 miles even though he started cramping up IN THE FIRST LAP.

Evan Perperis was part of a two-man team in the classic team category with Wesley Kerr. They won second place with 80 miles.

Before we even talk with our guests though, we have a pretty intense discussion of Australia. You can blame Anne Carolyn Clifford, or you can blame Will's poor pronunciation of Brisbane. (It SHOULD sound like "Bris-Bin")

This is the most obstacle-heavy episode we've ever had.

Over 90 minutes of Tough Mudder talk with Jim "Da Goat" Campbell.

Jim has been a guest on the show several times before, but we have never talked about his personal brush with death and what brought him to Tough Mudder.

After a motorcycle accident nearly killed him on a highway in Texas, Jim was written off by the paramedics on scene, by the cops that arrived later, and by the Doctors at the hospital. Jim says his personal philosophy of "Goat Tough" was born in that hospital bed.

Jim is one of the most well-known members of the Tough Mudder community and is one of the few people to have run in every World's Toughest Mudder since it began in 2011. Jim was the first man to complete 100 Tough Mudder events, leading the way for Joe Perry and Joe Anderson to join him this year.

Welcome back!

This is the first episode of Season Two, but it is not a typical episode. MATURE content warning.

We sat down with Ryan Woods and Evan Perperis to talk about Ryan's recent failed drug test at OCR World Championships. Ryan has admitted to taking the banned substance DHEA but has said he took it accidentally, mistaking it for the approved substance DHA. Evan has said on his Strength and Speed podcast that he believes Ryan is lying about taking the substance accidentally. Evan has said he thinks Ryan took it intentionally and got caught.

Both Evan and Ryan wanted to talk this out in a neutral forum. Matt B. Davis of ORM recommended our podcast and Evan and Ryan agreed. We are happy to provide a level playing field.

The conversation got heated. This is NOT an episode where your kids can listen along with you.

Mike Stefano joins us to talk about his experience with Alex Youngworth at World’s Toughest 2017. Mike pitted for Alex and did a mini-interview with Alex every time Alex finished a lap. Mike shares the audio from his podcast with us. It’s great to hear Alex progress from confident, to tired, to beaten up. If you’ve ran WTM before you’ve felt like Alex before. If you haven’t ran WTM, you get a little peak at what it’s like at 3:00 in the morning when you’re tired and cold and just want to die.

Be sure to check out the Mstefano Running podcast for more from Mike and his co-host Katelyn.
